Book your wedding photography - with as little as a 1% deposit
Why do you need a booking deposit?
Any wedding photographer is going to ask you for a booking deposit. The deposit will usually be NON REFUNDABLE. The need for this is quite simple, most photographers are self employed and the only income they get is by shooting. Quite simply time is limited there are only so many weekends in the year (most people still get married at the weekend) and if you hold the photographer to a date and then pull out he/she may struggle to get a booking on that date.
In the past I have treated the booking deposit in different ways. For the last 4 years I've been working on a 20% deposit and the balance payable 2 weeks before the wedding. However, this is quite a risk if people are booking me a couple of years in advance. This is especially true for teachers who if they want a summer wedding are almost always forced to book in their summer holidays, and these dates tend to book up well in advance.
I still hold to the concept that 20% 1 year out is fair and right. But the risk is too grate if you want to book me more than 18 months out. So I'm now staring to offer a more staggered booking deposit based on when your wedding is taking place. So if you are getting married in more than 2 years time you will only pay an initial 1% Then when it is two years to go I ask for a further 9% making a total of 10% paid at this stage. Then when there is just one year to go you pay the final instalment on the deposit ie another 10%.
So really the deposit should be no reason not to book even if your wedding is a couple of years away you can now book with confidence.
